When to Start Looking for Shopping Cart Software

Embarking on a new venture is exciting. But, if you've decided to get into the world of ecommerce, you may be finding yourself a bit overwhelmed. Depending on your business model, your shopping cart software or ecommerce solution could be the lynchpin of your daily operations. When is the best time to start looking for this key piece of your future business? The answer depends on the phase of your business you are currently in. There are three possible phases, and therefor three possible times when you should start looking for shopping cart software:

Preliminary Phase

This is the earliest point at which you can begin searching for your shopping cart software. You may not know what you want in an ecommerce solution, but you are pretty sure that you want/need one. You have a rough idea of your possible business or maybe just your different options and directions that you might go. With this in mind, go out into the Internet and start looking around at the websites for the different businesses like the one(s) you are thinking about starting. Focus on their shopping carts. Make note of who built the software. Odds are it will say "Powered by So-and-So." or "Built by Such-and-Such." somewhere on the site, usually on the bottom of the homepage (accompanied by a trademark/copyright mark) or else look on the "About" page. If you don't see this information somewhere easily accessible, consider e-mailing the store owners, especially if you find the shopping cart appealing (and want to find out more about it) or if it's very bad (and you want to know to avoid it). This will help you weed through shopping cart reviews, when the time comes.

Also keep track of which features the shopping carts you like have in common. It's possible that you will encounter a few different carts, each with features you like, but not all the features you want in the same cart. Keep a list of the features you want anyway, it'll be useful later. You are way ahead of the curve in terms of searching for an ecommerce solution. You are laying a great foundation for later.

"Poised" Phase

This phase is quite a bit further along than Preliminary Phase. In "poised" phase, you already have a business idea that has begun taking form. Maybe you haven't made any sales (in person or online), but you've got a product or products, and you've started branding. You probably have a social media presence and are starting to generate buzz for your upcoming business. Before the frenzy for your products hits fever pitch, you are going to want to find your shopping cart software and get it into place. Consumer interest is very fickle. Even if you have a great product, you can't keep stringing prospective buyers along for too long.

As a poised phase entrepreneur, you already know what form your business will take and what you need your shopping cart to do. Use your business model to inform the list of features that you believe you want in your cart. With all this groundwork already done, you can probably head straight for a credible review source and start absorbing what they have to say, but it never hurts to investigate your competition. What kind of shopping cart software are other similar businesses using? What about other online businesses that aren't necessarily similar, but whom you trust and respect? You are poised on the edge of your ecommerce journey, don't rush into anything. Get all the information that you can.

Seasoned Phase

Seasoned phase entrepreneurs already have a business up and running. Maybe you have been selling out of your home, via mail, phone, e-mail/PayPal, or just going to craft fairs. You might have a brick-and-mortar operation that you are looking to expand out onto the Internet. You are definitely ready to look for a shopping cart. Your friends or family have probably asked you why you haven't opened an online store already. Don't feel rushed. This is a big step. You didn't get where you are today by making hasty decisions.

Think about how you went about setting up your business in the first place. Next consider how running that same business will be different online. What features or functionality would have made your earlier business venture easier? What things do you absolutely need to be able to do online when you activate your shopping cart software? It's never too early or too late to start looking around for an ecommerce solution, just so long as you know what you want and take the time to do quality research.
